|July is moving fast as summer events continue at the Arena.
July is known for Independence Day and at the Arena a pair of special events will take place with the 777 Barrel Race next month set for July 1-3. The Deep South Amateur Cutting Horse Association is next with an event starting a 9:00 a.m. on July 23 followed by the annual
Mary Bird Perkins Dance Party to raise funds for The Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. In the late 1960s, sixteen community leaders headed by Dr. M.J. Rathbone, Jr. and Anna B. Lipsey saw the need for a community owned, nonprofit radiation cancer facility in the greater Baton Rouge area. In 1988, the first satellite treatment center was opened in Hammond, followed by 3 more Centers in southeast Louisiana: Covington in 1998, Houma in 2008 and Gonzales in 2009.

Alice Vickers DuBois, a decorated teacher, loving mother and wife, and a true cowgirl, is the newest inductee into the Florida Parishes Arena Wall of Fame.
She was recognized for her hard work and dedication numerous times throughout her career. She was named the NAAE Outstanding Teacher Award which is sponsored by Toyota. She was named Teacher of the Year at Ponchatoula High School in 2012 by the Tangipahoa Parish School System. Alice also partnered with legendary New Orleans chef Dickie Brennon to create a “farm-to-table” benefit fundraiser. The impact that she left on hundreds of students through the years is immeasurable. She shared with each of them, not only the knowledge and experience of Agrisceince, but her love of people and the commitment to community service.
