July is moving fast as summer events continue at the Arena.
July is known for Independence Day and at the Arena a pair of special events will take place with the 777 Barrel Race next month set for July 1-3. The Deep South Amateur Cutting Horse Association is next with an event starting a 9:00 a.m. on July 23 followed by the annual Mary Bird Perkins Dance Party to raise funds for The Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. In the late 1960s, sixteen community leaders headed by Dr. M.J. Rathbone, Jr. and Anna B. Lipsey saw the need for a community owned, nonprofit radiation cancer facility in the greater Baton Rouge area. In 1988, the first satellite treatment center was opened in Hammond, followed by 3 more Centers in southeast Louisiana: Covington in 1998, Houma in 2008 and Gonzales in 2009.
